About Thermostats

What do they do?

The thermostat controls the flow of coolant through the engine. It stays closed when the engine is cold to allow faster warm-up, then opens at operating temperature to allow coolant to flow through the radiator.

When to replace

Thermostats can fail stuck open (engine never reaches temperature, poor heating, increased fuel consumption) or stuck closed (overheating). Replace when symptoms appear or preventively when replacing the water pump.

Brand guide

Wahler, Mahle, and Gates are the main OEM thermostat suppliers. Some thermostats come as a complete housing assembly while others are just the thermostat element.

💡 Top tip: If your engine takes a long time to warm up or the temperature gauge sits lower than normal, the thermostat is likely stuck open. This increases fuel consumption by 5–10% and should be addressed.

⚠️ Known Ford Focus Issues

Thermostat housing cracking

The plastic thermostat housing on 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines can crack and leak coolant. Relatively cheap part but overheating risk if ignored.

Parts tip: The Focus shares many components with the C-Max and Kuga, so parts availability is excellent and prices are competitive. Generic aftermarket parts work well for routine servicing.
